Stop Snoring – Effective Remedies

Snoring can be a very disruptive and troublesome thing to endure, especially for those people closest to you like your spouse and family.  Not annoying to others close by, snoring can also disrupt your own sleep and have undesirable impacts to your health.  But there are some solutions so we’ll discuss some effective remedies to consider.

First of all it is important to understand that snoring occurs when there is vibration in your soft palate.  There are a number of factors which cause this.  The muscles which support the opening of the upper airway in the back of your throat relax during sleep.

There is also sometimes extra tissue in the palate and uvula and between this and a narrowing of the airway caused by relaxed muscles, snoring can occur.

There are many factors which contribute to snoring.  Basically anything which has to do with constricting of blocking the airways can contribute to snoring.  The muscle tone of the tongue can also be a factor.

This is why older people sometimes have a problem with snoring.  The muscle tone of their tongue degrades over time and this can sometimes contribute to the snoring.  Children can be troubled by snoring if their airways become constricted through a cold flu or enlarged tonsils and adenoids.  But for all these factors, they are some recommended methods to alleviate this problem.  Here are some suggestions.

  1. Lose Weight – As much as possible try to maintain a normal weight.  It has been shown that overweight people are much more prone to snoring problems than people who are of normal weight.
  2. Don’t smoke – Smoking can cause increased nasal congestion and excess mucous in the throat.  This may cause one to breaths more through the mouth which is not as effective as breathing through the nose and can lead to snoring problems.
  3. Reduce your alcohol intake – Alcohol can cause a relaxation in the soft tissues and muscles in the throat.  This can often result in snoring or sleep apnea.
  4. If you sleep on your side rather than on your back, this should reduce the incidence of snoring.
  5. Snoring Remedies – There are a number of effective home remedies you can try to clear out nasal congestion.  So the first thing to do is to increase the humidity in your room. If the air is too dry it can create a situation where your throat becomes irritated and constricted.

Also reduce the use of sedatives.  These cause the muscles in your throat to relax and may lead to snoring and sleep apnea as well.  And stay on a regular nighttime schedule.  Try to go to bed at the same time every night.  The consistency will help.
